The History of the Clairton Municipal Authority

1958-The Board of the Clairton Municipal Authority was formed.

1960-The construction of the primary system of the sewage treatment plant was constructed at a cost of $1,213,330.00.

1962-The first employees were hired and the flow that was being treated was only from the city of Clairton and was estimated at a flow of one million gallons a day.

1962-The Authority was incorporated on April 4th.

1976-The plant had an upgrade of adding a sludge drying system.

2001-2005 There was an upgrade of the current screw pumps, aeration tanks, denitrification tanks, drying room, gravity belt thickener, centrifuge, and the polymer delivery system. This was all completed by KLH Engineers, Inc.

Today the plant operates at 6 million gallons per day and 14 million during wet weather conditions. In the future it is estimated the plant will operate at 25 million gallons a day. Until the expansion study is completed the maximum million gallons per day will not be determined. The planned expansion will make the Clairton Municipal Authority the third largest treatment plant in Allegheny County.
